Enrolled at Cleveland OH March 27, 1901 as US 130901 to the American Ship Building Co., Cleveland OH (home port to Cleveland OH). Reenrolled at Cleveland OH May 4, 1901 (#119) to the Globe Steamship Co., Cleveland OH, J. C. Gilchrist, Mgr. (home port to Fairport OH).
The Neptune was transferred to the Gilchrist Transportation Co. when the fleet was merged in 1903. Gilchrist went into receivership in 1910 and the ship was sold at auction to the Lackawanna Steamship Co. (Cleveland, Ohio) in 1913; which became Interlake Steamship Co.
In 1915 the cargo hold was rebuilt to an arch construction.
The Neptune was sold to the Central States Transit Co. and then resold to the Dolores Steamship Co. (Cleveland, Ohio) in 1937; who renamed the ship, William M. Connelly.
The ship was sold for scrap in 1947 to Richard E. Dwor (Port Colborne, Ontario); who then resold to Mohawk Navigation Co. (Montreal Quebec). The ship was reenrolled as CAN 175995. It was then sold again 1948 to Canada Steamship Lines (Montreal, Quebec) to replace the Emperor (which had sunk on Lake Superior, on June 4th, 1947) and renamed to Martian.
The Midland Shipbuilding Co. converted the Martian to a package freighter in 1950.
The Martian was sold for scrap in 1969 to Marine Salvage Ltd. (Port Colborne, Ontario), who then resold to shipbreakers in Vado, Italy. The ship was Sailed to Sorel QC, where she was laid up for the winter. The Martian cleared Sorel on June 8, 1970 with under tow of the Polish tug Jantar (along with the Mathewston) and arrived in Vado on July 16. |
