Shortly after departing from Port Elizabeth, South Africa with a cargo of manganese ore, zircon and rutile sand for Montreal, Canada she ran aground in fair weather directly south of Thunderbolt Rock, Cape Recife, South Africa in a position 34°02,56'S / 25°41,97'E. Salvage was attempted however she remained aground on the rocky bottom and eventually broke her back. Though a small amount of her cargo was later salvaged, KAPODISTRIAS was left to break up on the rocks over the ensuing years. |
