Description
On September 17, 1965, the Fort William capsized (on her starboard side) while docked in Montreal, Quebec. The vessel became unstable as cargo was being moved to the upper deck, while pumping ballast. On rolling over, the calcium chloride cargo mixed with water and the resulting gas exploded. More than 150 fire fighters fought the flames for more than 28 hours, with some remaining on-scene for eight days. Five members of the 21 person crew died. The ship was salvaged on November 22 and moved to Davie Shipbuilding (Lauzon, Quebec) for repair. The Fort William returned to service in May, 1965.
