Description
On June 1, 1981 the Kareliya ran aground while sailing from London, England. The cruise was abandoned and the passengers were flown home. The ship arrived on July 30, 1981 at Newcastle on Tyne, where the extensive damage was repaired.

Beginning in June, 2003 the ship was operated by Star Vegas out of Pattaya, Tailand as a casino ship. The Thai Police viewed the ship as an illegal casino and raided the ship on October 24, 2003, arresting 58 people.
