Description
THALASSAPOROS went aground on Mayaguana Island, Bahamas on 22 October 1970 in a position 22.35N x 73.35W and was refloated on 3 November 1970. She was on a voyage from Hampton Roads, Virginia, USA to Japan when the grounding occurred. Upon inspection at New Orleans, Louisiana the grounding damage was found to be extensive and the ship was subsequently written off as a constructive total loss. She was offered for sale 'as is' in New Orleans. On 5 November 1971 she departed New Orleans (likely under tow) bound for Gothenburg, Sweden where she arrived on 13 December 1971. Shortly thereafter she was sold for around $405,000 to the Coast Navigation Company of Monrovia, Liberia who then had the ship drydocked for extensive reconstruction. When she returned to service in 1972 she had been renamed AJAX.
