CCGS Samuel Risley
CCGS Samuel Risley - Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada - April 24, 2003

In 2003 CCGS Samuel Risley carried an SP Barge (Self-Propelled). This craft was powered by diesel, azimuthal drive (ZED-Drive to we Canadians), weighed about 9 tonnes. It was used mostly to service small buoys in areas too shallow for the ship. There are two hydraulic winches just ahead of the control console and an A-Frame forward to lift buoys, chains and stones/anchors. It also had tanks and pumps to carry liquid cargo to lighthouses, although that function was seldom used especially as lighthouses were being automated. Here the barge has been lifted from its storage position on the starboard side of the Risley and launched on the port side. Destination unknown, but it took all but one of my deck crew!
