| DANIEL WEBSTER (MTS-626) as shown being towed by Moran tugs while inbound off NOB Norfolk on September 29, 2011. Originally built as the Lafayette-class ballistic missile submarine USS DANIEL WEBSTER (SSBN-626), she decommissioned in 1990 and was struck from the naval register. She along with sister SAM RAYBURN (SSBN-635), were converted to moored training ships (MTS) following deactivation of their nuclear powerplants (hence the reduced length of the sub). Both are based at Charleston, North Carolina and DANIEL WEBSTER is shown on her way to the Norfolk Shipyard for an overaul. She is not a commissioned ship and cannot be pefixed as USS. |
