Empire State
Empire State - Verchères, Québec - December 24, 1989

Suny training ship Empire State (VI) downbound on the St. Lawrence River off Verchères on December 24, 1989. Built in 1962 as the States SS Co cargo ship Oregon, she went in 1977 to Moore-McCormack as the Mormactide and then to US Lines under the same name in 1983 but never operated as such. Acquired by Suny in 1988, she was towed to Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin for conversion to a training ship. The work was not fully completed as she had to leave the Lakes before winter freeze up as depicted on this view. She still is the heaviest smoker I've ever seen.
