i was a deckhand on the Century in 1976 - what a dirty ship - and the superstructure was kinda ugly too - nothing but coal runs between Ashtabula/Conneaut & Nanticoke/Sarnia ... constantly blowing black coal dust out of my nose ... sometimes i'd grab a shower on coffee break and change my clothes ( took a lot of teasing from the rest of the deck crew for it) - made a good friend on deck - Scott Jenckes - JC Brennan was captain, and we had 2 chief mates that year : Neil & Blanchard
I was only on deck 5 weeks and took a transfer to the galley as Porter - less money, but a private cabin and the galley was clean & air conditioned
