Unloading fisheries salt at the A.M.Smith wharf, now the site of the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. Sea salt was imported from the Caribbean to treat fish - primarily cod - as a preservstive.

Appears to be the ship Karl Christian (listed without hyphen) ID#5182372, 2437 gt, built 1951, Flenderwerft, Lubeck. Renamed Mati in 1963 and sank 18 October 1967 off Constanza, Romania.
